Nick Heidfeld gives Sauber something to cheer about with a win at a wet and wild Silverstone. It's his 3rd career victory and it was a storming drive that took him to victory.
The entire race was at a frantic pace with cars flying off the track and overtaking all over the place. The action started early when Frentzen slid off the track only to do it again a lap later at Copse. He spun back into the track in front of Panis, who hit Frentzen and Michael Schumacher could only smash into Panis. Frentzen and Schumacher survived with only needing new front wings but Panis had to retire with left rear tyre problems on lap 3.
Pizzonia was still in the lead at this point but he was put under pressure by Baumgartner. Baumgartner managed to squeeze his way through and build a nice lead with Pizzonia holding a train of cars behind him. Raikkonen was dueling with Pizzonia for almost the entire race and just couldn't find a way past. When everyone thought Baumgartner might just give himself a comfortable cushion at the top of the Drivers Championship, his car developed an electrical problem which had to be corrected in the pits.
Bruni disappeared off camera with a terminal electrical problem on lap 7. Verstappen was also doing well in his Minardi until his engine blew on lap 24. Da Matta was in the mix for the lead when he retired with a puncture on lap 35. Sato was the final retirement on lap 50 after his left front suspension failed to end a dismal day for Jaguar.
As usual with wet races, there were plenty of incidents. Pantano, Raikkonen, Pizzonia, De La Rosa and Barrichello all had incidents. The drama wasn't over as the last 10 laps saw plenty of changes. Villeneuve was on the fringes of the points when he came under pressure from Montoya. Montoya was late on the brakes and tapped Villeneuve round, both cars spinning. More late drama involved Fisichella and Baumgartner. Fisichella was 2nd to Heidfeld and Baumgartner was looking deadly quick. Baumgartner could have settled for 3rd but got greedy and hit Fisichella. Fisichella managed to keep control but Baumgartner spun. Unfortunately, Fisichella's pace dropped off and slipped down the field.
Heidfeld takes Sauber off the bottom of the Constructors with victory at Silverstone. Salo benefitted from all the incidents to find himself in 2nd and claw back that 6 point lead Baumgartner had. Button gets back in the title hunt with 3rd place. Raikkonen looked quick but he found himself behind very wide cars and got 4th. Baumgartner was the fastest car at the front of the field and had to overtake many cars twice to get 5th and retain the Championship lead. Fisichella will be having words with Baumgartner after having 2nd cruelly taken away and having to take 6th. Coulthard gives McLaren a double points finish with 7th and Pizzonia just managed to scrape the last point for 8th.
