Anyways in the NES one you had to collect 8 pieces of Triforce.
Why?
One of the sections had been split up, i believe by Ganon, and hidden in increasingly difficult dungeons in order to stop Link, or anyone else for that matter, from locating it, and using it against him.
It's the three segments, you see. Which was fully explained in the SNES one... I'm not too sure about the NES one though, and about the eight/more pieces...
These correspond to the three godesses who created hyrule. That's in a cutscene at the beginning, I think either at the Deku tree, or when the Deku tree dies.
