Bit of a surprise here to me. Thought he'd end up back in England at Liverpool or Newcastle. Din't look particularly sharp in Euro 2004, but there was no sign of a career ending injury! But he says his knee is still a problem and if he can't perform at the top of his ability he doesn't want to perform at all.
Still looked like a decent player but he just announced his retirement bit of a shocker!

That's totally suprised me; I didn't know he had an injury of any sort, let alone a career ending one.
