This is of course Trigger Happy TV. A huge number of secretly filmed practical jokes played on members of the public. Now in it’s second series and THTV is still as popular as ever.
Some of the stunts that Dom Joly has pulled are brilliant, some stupid, some ridiculous but all hilarious. Seeing a red-haired tattooed pierced punk walk up to an old man in the park and start talking about sculptures is just side-splitting. Or having a man with huge earphones sitting next to a French person on a park bench, with a tape going that’s saying things like "I hate your country, I hate your language, I hate your food and I hate your face" has some great appeal to it.
Dom Joly of course doesn’t always get off scot-free however. He was banged up for an impersonation of a Yeti, severely told off by a policeman after crawling across a road dressed as a snail...
You may think that after a while the novelty will wear off, but it doesn’t! There is a certain freshness about THTV. No matter how many times you’ve seem him pull the stunt you can’t wait to see it done again. I think that watching the publics reactions when someone dressed in combat fatigues coming into a bus shelter and shouting "Nobody move, this area is now under the control of the Guardian Angels. Do not worry everything is alright, please don’t panic. Does anyone have a problem with that? Excellent" in a passable American accent, is something that will never lose it’s appeal.
The only problem that I can see with this programme is the worry that Dom Joly will get recognised and that non of his jokes will work. This has already begun happening, with Dom not getting the same reactions with his giant mobile as he did in the first series. Luckily Dom also seems to have noticed this and is now using wigs and shades to conceal himself.
With the japes getting funnier and funnier I feel that Trigger Happy TV is a programme that should be considered a modern classic. It brings a certain freshness to Friday nights and a new meaning to the phrase "reality TV"
