Does unplugging the router and uninstalling the software not work? What problems is it still causing?
Spot the guy who knows nothing about networking. Routers ARE firewalls, they have intrinsic firewall nature, you can't just "turn them off".

You can get routers without a built in firewall actually. I just bought this one thinking I could turn it off.

No, because, a router acts as an interface between the Internet and your local network, the router has no idea where to send the different ports because you have one interface to a multitude of machines! Which is exactly what a firewall does!
There are extra firewall controls that can exist above and beyond what a simple NAT router offers, although these are unlikely to cause trouble. What sort of problems are you having with your router/firewall?
All I have to say is, NAT is the best kind of firewall you can get. Anything above that is paranoia.
I do believe most Routers come with NAPT, Add/Remove Programs appeared to work with someone over the phone with a similar Router.
