But after the first day there (today), I was thinking about how smartly to bother dressing (as I only have the one suit, just shirt and tie is better, but it's a fairly smart law firm..)
All the men wear suits, but then the only men there are solicitors. There are a couple of other legal secretaries, but they're both women, and so able to get away with skirt / trousers and a t-shirt-ish top, whateverthe 'dress code'.
The something occured to me, if the average woman can dress more 'casually' than the average man, might that contribute to the average woman earning a lower salary ?
Think about it - the smartness of your cloths reflect on how competent and capable people consider you to be. They're a status symbol.
And the shirt and tie (since women can wear suits with a 'regular' shirt) gives men a clear opportunity to out-smart women, so to speak.
So when you're considering a raise, your average man comes across as more competent, and so more valuable to the company / whatever.
Which employee would you instinctively value most - someone is a suit, shirt and tie, or someone in a trouser suit and open-neck shirt ?
Sure, there are other factors - genuine conscious sexism, unconscious ingrained sexism, the tendancy for the average man to be more assertive/agressive in negotiating wages, and probably some other factors.
But presumably this has to be a factor.
Who cares if it is ? Well, probably not you I suppose, but it seemed like a good idea when I thought of it, and there's nobody else here to tell.
Ah well, maybe one or two of the female members can use the theory to take a slightly better salary one day...

Sorry, but that just screams out FIGHT CLUB to me, once again, Mr.Durden. ;D

But, to 'the average (young) woman' these days, does it really matter any more? Women can wrap their fingers around men seemingly easier than ever before... And, before we know it, we're out of pocket and ridden in debt as they're living life on the high-road! :P
I agree with you, though. Basically, in the 'business world' (as they like to call it), the impressions you give off can have a great effect on the offers you might recieve and final result of the whole situation.
It's like being at school, in a way, when you were always told why you had to wear a uniform... Because you looked like part of the place you were representing, or something.... :)
We do exactly the same job, but are governed by a different set of dress rules, its quite bizarre.
Because there is no set 'smart' for women, they can basically wear what they want.
Where with men, smart means shirt + tie, jacket optional. Wow, such choice. It's why some men are reduced to wearing 'comedy' ties, if ever there were an oxymoron, and *gasp* bow-ties.
Although any man who wears a bow-tie should not be trusted and needs some serious therapage.
I think the shirt + tie thing is pretty outdated these days anyway.
Unless you're in a formal position (like law) where you need to put a professional face on for clients etc. there's really not much point.
Especially when you're just sat somewhere answering phones - it's completely pointless.
Bloke: "Hello sir! I'm calling to request that you consider our special offar!11 for free crap!"
Customer: "What are you wearing?"
Bloke: "Er .... a T-Shirt and some jeans?"
Customer: "No thanks then ... "
