Pump's always been the best.
I prefered the auto in 1.6 but pump is better in source.
pump as it does more damage, and you don't end up shooting loads of rounds that don't hit.

Actually, quite frequently I'll use my pistol over whatever primary weapon I have.
And if I start off with a pistol and pick up someones bullpup or krieg or whatever, I'll continue to use my desert eagle.
