I noticed in the manual that the controller in port two isn't listed as compatable with the system, is this why the controller in port 2 sometimes temporarily loses all power, this being rectified by turning off the ps2 by the main power switch.
And also this may be related, but I can't seem to be able to get 2 player mode on ssx, it says in the manual select single event, and the number of players screen appears, but it doesn't, it just goes straight in to one player mode, could this again be due to the controller in port two, or is it just that the controller port is f****d, if so i'm not a happy bunny, so can anyone help!

The non-vibrating analogue controller was a bit of a stop-gap controller on the PS1 (I assume it is a grey PS1 controller, as no such thing exists for the PS2) and it disappeared very quickly when the original Dual Shock units arrived.
As such, it may well be that it is not compatible with the PS2. I did have one, but sold it with my PS1, so I couldn't tell you for sure whether or not it is the cause of your problem. The only way to know for sure is to get hold of another Dual Shock 2 and try that - or another controller that *is* compatible.

More than likely. If the system doesn't detect a second controller, you won't get the 2-player option.

Please mind the language - neither the regulars nor the moderators appreciate it, and you'll quickly get on the wrong side of people.
If there was a problem with the controller, you may have damaged the port - but it's unlikely. Get another, compatible controller from somewhere and try that first. Make sure it's either a Dual Shock 1 or 2 though, because SSX is not designed for standard PS1 digipads.
