Wi-Fi ; we all screamed about this feature when they announced for the DS it – but what does it really mean?

Well, I know some answers after watching a good program on channel 5, which is rare for channel 5 to have a good program these days! Wi – Fi will be extremely big very soon, you’ll be able to sit down in your local Starbucks and surf the internet with your laptop (equipped with a wireless network card) or your DS.

The Best thing is, if your house I equipped with a wireless router you’ll be able to play with people doing the same – on your DS. So its DS online in theory. Now – here’s the great bit, and the bit that made me chuckle;

If you sit outside a house equipped with a wireless router you’ll be able to use their bandwidth. They say all houses with wireless routers are marked with a wired X alerting other surfers to the fact that ‘this is a free surfing point’ so you’ll be able to do this with your DS. And if you have neighbors with routers in close proximity – think of the possibilities. Of course, people with half of brain can password protect a router – but over 50% of people don’t. This bald presenter drove down some streets in London and picked up a fair few routers ready to be exploited, most of them weren’t protected at all.

So there you have it, Wi – Fi simplified. Seems like the best thing since sliced bread, and that’s a mouthful. Use this thread for all your Wi-Fi queries and discussions.

Ditto. Edgy told me that this wouldn't work though, as it eventually goes down a wire or something. I previously thought it did.

Okay, you did mention that.
But I put it better.

And you forgot to mention that anyone can waltz in and nick your connection without as much as a tip of the hat and a polite cough.

Although with the DS, it's not a big deal - as there's nothing personal to protect. And for people like me, it's good, as I can wonder along the street until I find myself outside someone's house where I can nick their internet.

But if you've got it on your PC, beware.

You forgot to say that WiFi stands for Wireless Fidelity.

Now you can all go home, safe in the knowledge that you know.

*cough* :D

Anyway, we passworded our wireless router from day 1, and never have to worry about it. The fact we're in the country(ish) also helps, too.
