Out of all the films I've seen from the Far East over the last five years or so, Infernal Affairs probably rates as one of the best. The story involves the twin tales of two undercover moles - one working for Internal Affairs, the other working deep in one of Hong Kong's biggest triad mobs. Both group leaders know who their own mole is, and frantically try and undercover the others before they themselves get uncovered.

The story sometimes threatens to trip over itself, but it lends itself to some brilliant set-pieces, all cleverly plotted and tightly scripted, and it never resorts to cheap gunplay or shock tactics. Granted, there's a fantastic ending that comes straight out of left field, but seeing as you know who both of the moles are from the very beginning, the story concentrates more on their personal lives and how they cope with life undercover. It's beautifully understated and excellent directed, and the two leads and superb throughout.

Get it, watch it and love it before the inevitable Hollywood remake rumbles round - Brad Pitt is rumoured to star.

This is probably next on my "dvds to buy" list.
Although, I'm still not sure whether to get the UK version, or pay a bit more and get foreign version with the whole trilogy like these:

I dunno whether the other two are any good though? Still, the first one looks good.

I saw the adverts for this in the cinema and thought it looked really good. The best bit about the advert was that it had about five minutes of logos before you actually got to see any of the film: at least 400 companies must have been involved in producing it. At least. Never got to see it because my foreign/independent film watching is proportional to how many Hollywood craptaculars I've been to see with my mates - I just couldn't face another movie like SWAT that month. Will look out for this one on DVD, probably get it when Zatoichi comes out so that I can have a Japanese film feast.

And since this is thread about cool subtitled films: go and see The Return, it's Russian, moody and great.
