You can use
{ vertical-align: middle; }
But it only works on block level elements. Takes a bit of practice working out how to apply it, I tend to use it on forms for aligning labels.
There's always the 50% margin approach, but thats ropey too.

I just bought all my staff this book as a farewell pressy from myself. Recomend any serious about a future in web design should read this

There's no continuity, it's really bad on the eyes, there's no logical structure and the colours are enough to throw me into a seizure.
