For an assignment at Uni recently I was running low on material for 'Digital Audio Broadcasting', so I padded it out with a page or two on how its implementation affects us socially, and how analogue broadcasting could be switched off soon "in the interests of preserving the quality of their transmitted material". And it looks like I was right. This week I've read articles in several newspapers stating that analogue radio broadcasting will indeed cease to transmit, and it's going to be sooner rather than later. So that's just a quick warning to anyone that has an old radio - it won't work soon!

Are they going to pay for everyone to replace their analogue radios in their cars?

True about the OAP uproar :D I can see that one happening no doubt!

what about little radio gadgets like the thing you conect to your MP3/CD player to play them through your car radio - will they still work??

Pirate radio stations will cease to exist!

Digital broadcasting is a much better way of sending radio and TV signals (although they're not implementing it to it's full potential at the moment), but I don't think they've timed it right. The powers that be (mainly the BBC, who own most of the broadcasting stations around the UK) could run the analogue services for a bit longer. It's an expensive business to convert all your receiving devices to digital, and there hasn't even been an inmprovement in the quality of programming, just the data being sent is of a very high quality compared to what we have now.

I hardly watch TV, so having to fork out for a digital box when I want to do something simple like check Teletext isn't very convenient, and I don't think they've thought it out properly. There'll be a big backlash when analogue is finally switched off, no matter how much warning we're given.

Wow! That's quite scary really.

I love the way they advertise digital radios... on digital radio stations. That's like putting "Buy a car" on the dashboard of every vehicle that rolls out of a factory.

Yeah, I wrote a bit about the TV stuff too. I'm considering emailing my lecturer and going "look, I was right!".

Well, we already knew that last year the government decided that all analogue TV broadcasting has been planned to be switched off in 2010 if the situation allowed. That's old news.

What's new is the talk that, due to BBC and BSKYB's success, they could be looking at 2006 as the shut off date.

How soon?

I think there's going to be a massive old person uproar.
