Does anyone know of any programs that'll get rid of all the unwanted processes and crap you get with Windows XP? I use my PC mainly for games therefore I want as little slowdown as possible, much like you got with Win 98.

Hmm with the Task Manageer I've seen my Firewall uses some CPU during play but very little dunno if this would make much of a difference though.

Yeah, did that with C&C Generals, the biggest system hog out there. After an hour or so of playing one map the CPU goes up to 100% for useage and the game frame rate drops to around half a frame per second due to all the resources going from the CPU.

The Athlon 64 I have ordered has a 1MB L2 Cache so hopefully things will be a little better.

One of the grestest trick I was ever taught with XP was how to kill explorer.exe from running. THi suses the bulf of you resourses as it's the shell and windows GUI.

Load Game, then oprn Task Manager and stop explorer.exe, you GUI will all dissappear but your ram and processor will free up loads. You can restart it by reversing the steps.

It wouldn't. Tweaking CPU usage will make very little difference with modern games as some (C&C Generals as an example) will use the full CPU power regardless.

I have Tweak Xp Pro v2, but I'm not entirely sure about the cache optimization settings under

"Optimize CPU/Memory Usage for"
Applications / Background Tasks / System Cache

Under what situations would otweaking CPU usage for apps be better than for background tasks, and ditto for memory usage and the system cache?

Buy Tweak XP Pro v3

I saw that Turbonutter used it the other day in another thread and I went and bought it and it is the best piece of tweaking software that I have ever used...you can make just about everything go faster and chuck out all the crap in XP that you dont need like error reports and stupid services which just slow you down...TRUST ME, that is a good buy!

EDIT - The above link seems to be End It All 2. I have 1. Never tried 2, but might give it a go when I'm home.
