When it comes to a game on a Nintendo system a multiplayer option is almost compulsory. Star Wars: Battle for Naboo was criticized for not having a multiplayer mode.

Platform games are now including multiplayer options such as Donkey Kong, Banjo Tooie and more successfully Conker. Same with RPG’s such as Pokémon but I hope to see cooperative modes in this genre in the near future.

What is it though that attracts people to multiplayer games? Is it the competition or the ability to enjoy something with a friend? Or is it the ability to chase you friend stuck with just their hands as their weapon whilst holding an RCP90?

Whatever it is playing with a friend is much more fun than playing on your own so that is why I think multiplayer games should get much more recognition in the future than simply an add on to the main game. Quake 3: Arena and games such as Turok Rage wars are now appearing which are made for multiplayer, but what I’m hoping to see in the future where a single player mode and a multiplayer mode are weighed equally.

The closest I have seen to this happening is Perfect Dark, as the popularity of Goldeneye’s deathmatch had persuaded Rare to lavish more time on Perfect Dark’s one. Mario Kart is also a classic multiplayer game but the one player game could have been a lot better. South Park had a decent multiplayer game but the one player wasn’t nearly as good.

Now with Internet gaming we should see so many new forms of multiplayer games and the possibilities are endless. What would you like to see in the future of multiplayer gaming?

LAN =)
Great fun, had a few mates round the other day with their pcs, mini-lan for a few days. Multiplayer PC titles with the advantages of console all-in-one-room.
See if you can get to a lan party (like i8), or set one up with your friends.

Keeping to the future of gaming rule then Dringo.

More games should have multiplayers but making them as big as single players is a no no. There should be multiplayer specific games and games that have multiplayer games on the side. The industry has it right.

What if you have no friends or none that live nearby or you have no money to buy more controllers or a modem, that is half the game wasted. Developers should concentrate on one part, multiplayer gamers can buy multiplayer games but single players single, or both, both. but a combination would only hit a handful of people.

I too would choose TV gaming rather than online gaming. If you’re playing someone online, and say you kill him or her (on the game that is) you will not be able to see them punching the wall or throwing the joypad down in frustration!

As long as you continue having great multiplayer games such as Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Virtual Tennis I doubt if the world of multiplayer gaming will ever go down hill.

I love the idea of having “simulants” on PD as you can practise your multiplayer skills without anyone knowing. Long live Multiplayer games!

I put something like that in Console Wars and Ideas where one could play as Navi and heal Link if he has enough magic and let out small bursts of stuning energy. The other plays as Link of course!!

What if 1 person could play as Zelda and the other as Link in a cooperative gaming mode?

Both

but internet gaming does feel like Single player.

Nah.... not all games should include multiplayer options. For example, Zelda would become aweful if multiplayer elements were used!

Saying that, what do u prefer, multiplayer where u are all on one console, or across the web? Personally I prefer all hudddled round one TV- the tension, atmosphere and the rest make it so much more rewarding!

The co-operative modes in an RPG is a brilliant idea I think. Like Jet Force Gemini!!

I've put an idea like that in most of my RPG ideas in Console wars and ideas forum.
