I took a stick of RAM from an older computer but it doesn't say anywhere on it what kind it is etc.

is there a way to check if it's compatible with this computer (motherboard) without having to slot it in etc??

if not - is there any risks in trying it??

thanks

The RAM won't fit in the slot if it's not supported. If it'll go in the slot then the motherboard will run it. The question is. how quickly, but this can be ascertained from the BIOS.

Is there not a label on it at all?

Otherwise I would take a note of what the actual chips say, google it and see if you can find out. As a last resort, if the RAM will fit in the socket, (don't force it, line it up to make sure all the pins will fit first) and then if it will fit, shove it in.

That way you can tell during the startup what it was.
