My videogaming life has consisted largely of multipalyer gaming, a factor which has influenced many of my purchases. More recently though, I've been playing single player games more often. I've noticed two things:
Firstly, It's never as much fun. This is without exception. Maybe a game could prise a smile from my face, but a single player game is not going to get me laughing out loud, as even some weak multiplayer titles are prone to do (albeit sometimes at the hilarious glitches and inconsistencies present.)
Secondly, It doesn't last as long. Multiplayer modes on Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, Duke Nukem and the like kept me going for months on end (is a month on it's end any longer than a normal month? I'd have thought it was shorter myself, but there you go..) whereas Games like Mario 64 or zelda kept me going only for a couple of weeks at best, and have little replay value.
Then again, perhaps I'm being a little harsh. Single player games seem to be more enjoyable when a few people are present, whether you take turns in 'lives' or just offer advice. Is it the social interaction outside of the game that contributes to the fun, or the multiplayer action, or both? I'm now completely and utterly unsure. Oh well, lastability then. I'm pretty sure that's much less on a single player game.
Maybe.
