The good news is that Saddam Hussein is facing the death penalty.
The bad news is that David Beckham's taking it.

There was nothing wrong with that goal. Meier was poorly placed, so it didn't stand. Fair enough, we all make mistakes; that was a very unfortunate one. We didn't deserve to win, the way we played, but we should have. We should have been in the semi finals, but there's nothing that can be done now.

It's over and done with, but that was a very unfortunate event which has caused no end of problems for the England team and Urs Meier, the unlucky sod. The moral of the story? Don't get on the wrong side of the British gutter press.

But, looking forwards, there's still the 2006 World Cup- if the right players are on the right form, England could well be the surprise package.

Or maybe both teams played equally well, meaning penalties were needed?

I think you miss the point though. If England were good at football it never would have gone to extra time or penalties in the first place. They relied on 1 player all through the tournament, once he was out of things it was all over.

'scuse me, but...well I may have got this wrong, but we weren't beaten in normal time. Nor in extra time. It took penalties to separate England from Portugal. Which means I find it rather odd that so many people are saying "England are rubbish at football". If that were the case, Portugal would have beaten us over the 90 or even the 120 minutes, wouldn't they?

As funny as Bullet's pictures are, we can't blame Beckham for all this. He was first up to take the penalties, and fluffed it because he didn't realise that the penalty spot was so heavily sanded; this was only clear to see afterwards. If we can blame anyone, it should be Urs Meier; he was badly placed, but that goal should have stood, and if there was any doubt he should have asked one of the assistants, who would have been in a good position to see.
