Yep, that time of my life has come where I really need to sit down and think ahrd about what I want to be and where I want to go in life.

Having gone to an expensive private school, I guess Uni is the only next step, but what to do there? I have seriouslt thought about three paths of job, and I wanted any more info from you guys, perhaps you know someone in one of these professions, or maybe even you are yourself.

Job option #1 - A Journalist

I had thought about this option a bit, but then I spoke about it with Kyle, which rekindled my liking for the idea. English is my best subject at school, always has been even in a school known for it's maths geniuses and it's science nerds. I also enjoy writing, a lot of people here write their stories purely for the competitions, I actually enjoy writing them. So I'd like to do that, but it would have to be for a specific field, like sport, or I'd quite like to do Politics.

I dunno, maybe a lil too dodgy a job for me though, you have to be patient, wait for breaks, but then again I guess you have to do that for a lot of jobs.

Job option #2 - System's Analysist

This is possibly the one I would love to do the most, simply for the fact I love IT. The reason I would like to do this as opposed to like becoming a programmer or something, is that it has the whole communication side of it. You have to be able to communicate with your client, and talk to them clearly about what they want the system to do. I'm good at that, possibly one of my best skills, what with my debating genius :p

Possibly the best paid job, but I'd like to think that wouldn't matter to me. I'd rather live comfortably, than live half way up my own a**e, with bank accounts full of millions.

Job Option #3 - Sports

This is probably an 'easy way out', but I'd love to do it. I love sports as it is, and I'd love to be able to coach little kids on a full time basis, pass on my enjoyment hopefully.

That's it I guess, obviously coming from a posh school, there is always the ol' law, medicine, accountancy that is expected of me, but none of them tickle my fancy.

For AS I am planning to do:

English
ICT
History/RS (one of the two)
Economics
PE

Then dropping Economics for A level.

BAH!!!!

If you bothered reading any of that, any advice at all on any of the career options is good....ta

Well, if University is defnitely what you want then you want AS and A Levels which you know you can do well in so you can get those UCAS points, obviously though, depending on what you aim to do at Uni you may need certain A Levels.

Another thing is that, from here (assuming youve just done GCSEs??) there is a hell of a lot of time until you finish uni, 5 years from now you could be a very different person and want different things. Be prepared to change if you have to!

I went through about four years where I was certain I wanted to go into teaching, yet it got to the stage where I had to commit to a PGCE course and I changed my mind completely.

Do Systems Analyst.

That's my gut reaction, and I think it'd be yours too. It's often right.
Sounds like something you could enjoy and make a decent career of. The ideal combination.

Why do all you losers choose your AS levels so early....?

I've finished Year 11 and my GCSE's and I'm still deciding.

Going for:
- Maths
- Geography
- Music
- Politics

On the Sports front. You don't want to be a proffesional player right? But you want a job in coaching and a development team basically. Well I coach tennis to children between the ages of 4 and 16 at times, and I'm only 16. So from my experience, it's fun, as I'm being paid to do something I enjoy doing, and therefore I have found it quite easy. Tis tough sometimes though, e.g when you enforcing authority over people the same age as you....

I'm not sure that there is an easy way out. To make a lot of money in Sport, you need to be qualified, and that takes work.

The other two I don't know that much about, although I would love to be a Sports writer. However I don't know much about how System Analysts and Journalists learn and get to the top...

I don't think that is true by any means. None of us would write the stories if we didn't enjoy writing them, why else would we choose to fill our free time with something we didn't enjoy? For myself at least, writing is just a fun passtime, whether it be on games, or perhaps a story, its just your own little piece which you can fill with what you want. I do occasionally need an idea of what to write about, story-wise, which is why I frequently enter the Story Comps...

Anyhoo, good luck with the future and all, fellow, are you Year 10 or 11, as I have to choose my options soonish, and am coming to the end of Year 10. I am thinking about:

English Language
Media Studies
Maths
IT
Psychology

(4 of those 5)

OK well systems analyst is something you can do after you've been a programmer. It is a step up from it and will require several years experience in the industry first. You would be looking at doing a Computer Science degree for that.

I enjoyed it when I was at uni, it was what I did. But I can't comment on actually working in the industry. The jobs market in IT however is very volatile. You need to be good, but more important is the experience.

I don't know.

What I do know:
Doing 5 subjects at AS is a hell of a lot of work.

Just to clarify, it seems a bit muddled, I'd like to be a journalist covering Law/Politics, but not a profession directly in it.
