It's about time these damn movie companies bit the bullet and released films globally, both at the cinema and on DVD. Appaerntly, we get the movies at the cinema later because it saves the company money - they show it in the US and send us the reels when they're finished with them, saving them the cost of making additional masters; hence even our 'just released' films have flecks and marks all over them.
As for the cost of discs - DVD won't truly take over from pre-recorded VHS until the discs are sold at the same price, IMHO.
And why do we lose out on the extras? So they can put god knows how many other languages on! I'm sorry, but I'm English/British, and that's all I want on my DVD's. Call me Xenophobic if you like, but I don't want all the European languages on my discs - I'd rather have the extras. I'm NOT European, and so help me I never will be.
The enhanced region-coding may not prevent the sale of R1 discs in the UK either; apparently RCE only works if you have an 'open' multi-region player - i.e. not locked to any specific region. A friend has a player which is multi-region, but you have to select the region before playing a disc, 'locking' the player to that region until you change it again... in which case RCE discs work just fine!
