Come. On.
He scored against Switzerland and an incredibly poor Croatia, and suddenly people are comparing him to Pelé?!
He should not even be mentioned in the same breath as Pelé. It truly is pathetic. What impresses me most is how he gets raved about when he's on form (goal against Arsenal, a year of nothing and now two good games in Portugal) and nobody knows he exists for most of the year. Amazing. Got more yellow cards than goals last season and was looking like being at Everton on £13000 a week next season. But four goals later he's the new Pelé and is worth £50 million. Pele scored over a thousand goals in his career - Rooney has a hell of a lot to do.
If he's so phenomenally good, why isn't he banging them in for Everton? And don't give me that rubbish about them being a bad team...a class player will score a good few in any team.
To say that Rooney is anywhere near as good as Pele was is utter bull. I saw Pelé play (on the telly, obviously), and he was a genius. Best player I've ever seen. Rooney, as well as he's done, is nowhere near as good as Pelé was at 17.
I mean, Pelé scored on his debut against Argentina when he was 16 for feck sake.
He "scored on debut against Argentina in 1957 and went on to score 95 goals in 104 matches for Brazil. Notched a total of 1,280 goals in his 1,363 games" according to http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,1245068,00.html
So in conclusion, anyone who even mutters Rooney's name in the same sentence as Pelé's in a comparitive sense truly is a complete and utter idiot.
I mean Pelé. PELÉ for fook sake. Is having Rooney compared to him?
And another point - the irony of "Roomania" is hilarious.

Because for one reason or another he doesn't play regularly. Similar situation with Vassel as well.
Have you seen Pele play?
Rooney's still 18 and nowhere near his peak yet. Rooney is also playing in a more faster game, not that it means anything.
You've seen the kids got talent and is not afraid on anyone or anything. You saw the way he took the ball of Zidane, which is another part of his game. You don't see him standing up front all the time like other strikers. He likes to come back and get the ball instead of waiting for survice.
We'll have to wait and see.
A rash decision in my view. Owen HAS to play, his record for both club and country proves that.
And if it wasn't for Owen, Rooney would only have scored one goal so far.
Thicko. If I was going to play with one forward it'd be Rooney. He can keep possession and his link up play is vastly superior to Owen's.
The average age of people in this thread is under 20. I hate people who say "nernerner I think Pele is the greatest player of all time......"
Based upon what? about half an hours old school footage, and for the more informed maybe some replays of a couple of the huge old world cup mathces this supplemented hugely by the ramblings of old men.
Lets face it, A) he would get ravaged today B) None of us are informed enough to proclaim him the greatest of all time. C) I could make a highlights video that makes DAvid Ginoal look the best player of all time.
Zidane is quite clearly a superior player. Power, Stamina and fitness that were far less of a feature back then, ridiculous skill level and thousand of hours of video proof that he doesn't play bad.
He will be crap in about 4 years.
So I wouldn't compare him to Pele.
