There was no need whatsoever to post all that crap. A link would have been sufficient.

You Can Hide

Countless video games feature camouflage on their character models, but Snake Eater is the first one to actually put camo to practical use. Solid Snake will gather a virtual wardrobe of different outfits, each with unique camouflage patterns on them. Fire blends black and red, snow uses shades of white,

leaf varies greens to blend in with brush, and black is self-explanatory. To change your clothes, just pause the game, go to the menu, and it will switch instantaneously. Every snappy dresser knows how to accessorize, and Snake has a different color of face paint for every occasion as well.

Snake is just another brick in the wall.

The jungle is a varied place, and when you're a one-man army, it's essential to blend in. Depending on the outfit Snake is wearing and the world around him, he'll be assigned a camo index.

This is a percentage, from zero to 100 that dictates the chance you have of not being spotted by enemy sentries. At 5%, you're sticking out like a Hummer on a go-kart track. At 95%, you're virtually invisible to anyone passing by.

The percentage also depends on your movement. The faster you're traveling, the more likely your cover will be blown. Also, the closer you are to the ground or a solid object will affect things, too. Kneeling is better than standing, but not

as good as being prone on the ground. Hugging a tree trunk usually aids your efforts quite a bit. The handy index on the HUD will always let you know where you stand.

Hungry? Why Wait?

Espionage and sneaking works up an appetite. Snake may be a superfly super agent, but he's still just a man, and he needs to eat like the rest of us do. There are no Subway franchises in the deep jungle (not yet, anyway), so Snake has to fend for himself in the sustenance department. This means he'll have to do a

little hunting. Wildlife abounds, and you can feel free to kill it. Shoot a frog, rat, snake, or even alligator, and it turns into a ration, that you can pick up and add to your inventory. If the shot was fatal, the meat is only good for so long. If you used a tranquilizer gun, it appears as a caged animal in your inventory, and will stay fresh forever.

In previous trailers on MGS 3, Snake has been shown physically taking a bite out of his prey. Unfortunately, this will not happen in the finished game. You can expect to see a caption mentioning how the food tastes and how it affected Snake'
s hunger, but that's about the extent of it. It's also worth noting that your health will be replenished over time, even without eating -- though it returns at a slow rate.

Eating regularly is a good idea, regardless of your health situation. If it's been awhile since Snake filled his gullet, his stomach will involuntarily grumble. This is both good and bad. The fact that this makes the controller rumble is a novel concept. However, the consequence is enemies may hear the noise and be alerted to your presence. This element resembles Metal Gear Solid 2, where Snake can get a cold and start sneezing sporadically

if he spends too much time out in the rain. It's still unknown whether you'll need to hydrate yourself in the game, as well. My guess is Snake drinks his own pee when nobody's looking.

Close Quarters

Melee combat has never been one of the series' strong suit. It's generally just a last-ditch effort to escape when an enemy is onto you. That's all about to change. Snake has adopted a close-quarter combat method that has been a staple in special forces training for decades. It's a blend of handgun and knife tactics that can get an operative out of many a sticky situation.

Snake can grab an enemy, and corral them in a choke hold. This provides you with a human shield, and enemies will most likely not want to blast their friend along with you. Of course, Snake didn't get where he is by being merciful, so you can choose to fill them full of holes while their helpless coworker can only watch in horror. There are several other options once you get a baddie in your clutches, too. If you have some time to kill (no pun intended), you can threaten them with death in order to learn information. You'd be amazed at how chatty someone can be with a bowie knife jabbed into their throat. If you're sick of carting them around, it's no big thing to just snap their neck.

Radar Go Bye-Bye

We must bid a fond farewell to the classic Metal Gear Solid radar system. Snake will no longer have instant access to who's looking for him and where they are. I guess that there had to be some concessions to get the camo index up. Snake's job can't be too easy. Fortunately, alternate methods present themselves. The first is sonar, which requires you to click the analog to hear the soothing blip. This will show on a circular window where other beings are. It fades quickly and only lasts as long as your battery does, but still helps matters quite a bit. A motion detector can do just that, so you can sense if enemies are on the move. Another device, the AP, will vibrate when hostiles are in the area.

It's easy to fall off of this rickety, old bridge.

The physics have been totally redone, since no game worth its salt is without the trendy ragdoll physics. Blast a bad guy in the chest with a shotgun, and he'll fly back in satisfying fashion. Take said now dead bad guy and throw a grenade at his corpse, and he'll fly across the screen. It's a dirty job, so you might as well have fun with it.

CODEC transmissions are back, and this time the people you converse with are strangers. Para-Medic and The Boss are two wily females that will chime in with advice and info, and Major Tom seems to be the guy dishing out orders and signing your paycheck. The images are no longer animated. Instead, you see Snake hun
ched over in the familiar hand-to-ear position, and get a still photo of the person on the other end. You can cycle through pictures, though, and even check out a bio on them.

People will likely miss repositioning the camera on CODEC transmissions, but they can now do it during some cutscenes. For example, there's one where Snake is using binoculars to survey the area. The screen will prompt you to hit R1,
which lets you see inside the binoculars yourself. Little touches like this should pop up all over the place, and are fast becoming a trademark of Metal Gear.

Unsolved Mysteries

At the Konami press conference, which took place the day before the actual show started, the media was treated to a long presentation about Snake Eater. While story was rarely talked about, and in fact Konami personnel don't even know the details, one can infer a few things from the scenes we witnessed. We're

just speculating here, but you may not want to read the rest of this section if you're trying to stay away from any potential spoilers. The big shocker could be that the main character is not the Solid Snake you know and love. A few subtle hints and a few not-so-subtle ones draw you to that conclusion.

The first big one is that the game takes place in the 1960s -- which also explains why the CODEC is less advanced and Snake is without his radar system. How could the same guy look relatively identical to the last two games, which supposedly took place over 30 years in the future? Other odd things pop up, like the fact that your inventory lists "Cigar" instead of the pack of smokes that never leaves Snake's side. There's a good chance you'll be playing as Big Boss, the man Solid Snake was cloned from. Pretty mind-boggling, isn't it?

The cast of main characters holds very few familiar faces. The antagonist is a stranger, and there are plenty of beautiful women who will either be working with you or against you. One is sporting some crazy chain mail-type gear, and looks like a precursor to Ninja. Someone with ties to Revolver Ocelot will tangle with you, only this time using more automatic weaponry. Maybe it's a young Revolver himself!

Slick Slither

It's hard to get a good feel for the game while playing it on the loud, obnoxious E3 show floor. Still, it's plain to see that this is going to be one monster release later this year. Hideo Kojima continues to outdo himself, and the new camo index could revolutionize the rapidly-growing action/stealth genre forever. Let the naysayers eat crow; this November, you'll be eating snake.
