OK, I'm hopefully moving house within the next Month (getting my own place, yey!). Now I'll need some new BB.

Fortunately, I will be able to get 1Mb at my new address and basically, I need some advice aboot Pipex...

Now, upon checking the Pipex site, it is clear that they rock in the cost department (There are cheaper, but I don't want to sacrifice quality/reliability/support) - but there's talk about additional IP's.

BT Broadband allows me to use multiple machines on the same IP address, which I like. I can browse the web with the PC, Lappie and play online through the Xbox and PS2.

Will Pipex do the same for me? Will I only need the one IP?

In fear of digressing, I'll cut it short - is the Pipex Service exactly the same as BT's?

Also, to earn yourselves some extra points, could you list the (honest) pros & cons of Pipex. I've been to adslguide.org but it doesn't explain much without getting all technical and stuff. I just want to play games and look at pr0n with the only problem/setback being the girlfriend.

Thank yoo :)

No it would be random, just like dial up is. But as you have a router you could be connected for weeks, months etc and have the same IP so it doesnt matter.

Oh that's fine then. I probably wouldn't see the benefits of a static IP.

If, however, I did need to keep the same one, and knew my current one, would I be able to choose to use that same IP again or would I be issued with a random one?

Static IP would really be used in anything like an FTP stuff like that were you need to remember your IP. But if you have a router you always connected so would have the same IP for weeks etc. Only problem would be if you were disconnected and didnt know your IP. But really if you not trying to access your computer remotely then theres no problem.

Whoa, thanks very much Adrian! That was more than enough help there :D

Well, I'll be using a Netgear DG834G modem/router so I shouldn't have any problems with the whole 'no static IP' thing. So, what scenario would require me to have a static IP anyway?

Anyhoo, You have confirmed my choice for me - now to get the house :D

Thanks again

One IP is fine, and have had XBox Live running, and my friends got a few computers hooked up to his router with one IP.

Pipex service should be exactly the same as BT.

Pipex pros and cons
+ cheap service
+ realiable
+ plenty of bandwidth(about twice as much as there are customers)
+ newsgroups(not many ISPs come with newsgroups)
+ 50Mb webspace
+ 12 mail boxes
+ good customer service
- contacting customer service(phones can be busy in peak times or when theres and problem, and email is responded to very quickly. I myself havent had the problem though)
- there are a few cheaper services around like Plusnet
- no static IP(so you always get a new IP once you disconnect, not a problem if you dont need a static IP, and not even a problem if you connect via a router)

The bandwidth issue above is an important factor when chosing an ISP, with what customers Pipex have now they have about twice as much bandwidth to take care of every customer using there connection to the fullest.

Pipex arent the cheapest any more as there 1Mb is £33.99 when Plusnet do it for £29.99. Plusnet also do a 2Mb service for £39.99, which is based on the Office connection and is a 20:1 connection rather than 50:1.

I have been with Pipex now for 2 years last week. They have been very realiable, with only problems occuring from BT faults and the odd Pipex problem. Speed is always high with no slow down during peak times or anything. The newsgroups are an added bonus as not many ISPs carry them and Pipex offer one of the best newsgroup services, not as good as paying for a service but it is free and without any caps unlike pay services.

Overall Pipex are a excellent ISP and one of the best in the ADSL market as well as one of the biggest. Prices arent the cheapest but the extra few pounds a month might be worth it as they are a very good ISP.
