Sony and toshiba are apparantly changing the emotion engine and graphic synthesiser to the 0.13 micron manufacturing process, this will allow them to increase the graphic synthesiser's onboard VRAM to 32mb and to increase the clock speed of the emotion engine, making it a lot more powerfull than the ps2 we know at the moment, to read more of this go to:

What are we going to do with our current ps2s and could a game designed for a console with 32mb of VRAM possibly work on the ps2 as it is now with only 4mb of VRAM?

There was an article on that in PSM2. About the add ons in the past being failures, They need to sell it cheap in order to benefit in the long term.

I agree, but do you really see that happening? :-(

Add ons for consoles that improve the performance of the console have had a chequered history, and Sony need to be careful about how they go about it. The last thing they need is to upset the early adopters (again).

I think that an upgrade would be good, it will make the console more powerful and therefore be better to deal with the power of the X-Box and Gamecube. I think incorpating the chip to be with the HDD/Broadband would be an idea but some people may not buy the HDD/Broadband, also it would make a lot of the inards of the PS2 not functional.
I think I would prefer it if Sony made it as a whole unit and then people who have the old model could exchange there old one for free or a small charge say £30. Sony could also take these consoles in and take out some of the parts, e.g. powersupply, memory and then test it and re-use it for the new console.
I would be happy as for an extra £30 I could have a new console with out spending alot of cash and Sony would get money and also save money on a few components. This way the HDD/Broadband would be cheaper and less complicated due to the fact that there is no memory or graphics chip aswell as the HDD and broadband connection.

Don't get your knicker's in a twist just yet! Wait until there's official news.

It may well be that the new chip is incorporated into the HD/broadband add-on due by the end of this year - though there is *no* evidence, even in rumour form, to suggest this at the moment.

New games designed for the new chip maywell not run on current PS2's. Thinking about it logically, that is 10 million PS2 owners (more by the time the chip is available - and including Sony's loyal fan's and 'early adopters' - who would be alienated. It would be a disaster for Sony, and not something they're likely to do.
