Current dilemma:

Planning on buying a cheapy laptop in the next few days - found a Toshiba with a Celeron 2.5ghz, 512mb etc for £470 - ideal for what I want it to do.

Which is? Website dev. Problem? It comes with XP home, meaning I can't use IIS to make the lappy act as a web server to test PHP scripts/mysql databases. Soo...what do I do? I'd rather not have to buy XP Pro upgrade, as that would set me back a ridiculous amount - about £150 IIRC.

Any ideas? Would greatly appreciate it! :)

You can't use IIS for PHP anyway due to being M$ propriotry, so it's ASP all the way there.

Servers for testing

Apache & MySQL (using phpMyAdmin). I have a linux redhat server set up at home for testing suing this config. Does the job perfectly and it's all free!

I've setup PHP and MySQL on this machine fine, but that's using IIS. Never used Apache or anything like that before, so I'm going to try out phi11ips suggestion of Xampp. :)

Apache with PHP and MySQL setup as well is very powerful. It's also very easy to setup, even a complete beginner could follow the instructions provided in the instructions for Apache and PHP. MySQL is slightly trickier to setup, but not hard really. Follow the instructions on their website and it's fine. Or use one of those all-in-one packages like below...

It's...beeaauutiful! You, my man, are a god!

Now next dilemma - which lappy to get. I've got 2 in mind, but I'll create a new thread for that in a bit, coz I'm greedy like that ya see. ;)

Now just gotta subject the ol' Midband to 50megs...gulp.

Wait wait!!

Download XAMPP.

It's about 50MB but comes complete with Apache, MySQL, Perl, PHP etc already set up.

You just unzip it, run one script which asks you what you want to include and it links it all together.

That's all you will need.

OK, next dilemma - which one do I choose?? Bearing in mind, all I'm after is a developement platform that is quick and simple to get up and running, not a fully-featured web server.

I'm tempted by Apache, as I've heard lots about it, and it seems to be a pretty safe bet. Or shall I try out Sambar, which states PHP and MySQL support on the website, which is all I'm after, really.

Also, just to clear things up, am I right in thinking IIS is a Microsoft technology which acts as a web server, but is first and foremost designed for web development rather than web serving (only allowing 10 connections at once, for example)?
