Ive seen a the videos for the new zelda game, it looks great and i want to get it, but to date the only zelda games i have finsihed/played are link's awakening for the game boy and a link to the past, both top quality titles that i enjoyed. I missed out on the N64 and have recently got myself a gamecube. Is it worth getting the other games such as wind waker or Oot, or is the story line one that you can pick up after a gap of about 8 yrs?

No, sorry.
Just talking in general.

It is quite annoying, though.
It's not like the designers sit down and think about where their new Zelda game fits with all the others. That would just be rubbish.

I wasnt after a time-line i was just wondering if it would be hard to understand the new game without playing the other ones, a bit like only watching the 3rd matrix and not the other 2.

The Ocarina Of Time is a good place to start, mainly because it is the best one. The Wind Waker is also an amazing game. I've finished it three times and I still plan to get through it again before the next one.

The stories aren't normally related.

The new one is apparently set after Windwaker (so you'd want to play that before this new one - no rush, you have until Christmas atleast) and Majora's Mask is a bit related to Orcarina of Time, so play OOT before MM.

But don't play them for the storyline, play them for them, because they are some of the greatest games of all time. :-)

There isn't much of a running storyline through the games, but I'd say the first game you should be getting is Wind Waker with Ocarina of Time. If you can get an N64 and Majora's Mask or the Collector's Edition Zelda Gamecube disc, then that is well worth it too.

Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are two of (and possibly the) best games ever.
