Today I see that Nintendos gameboy has sold its 100 millionth copy today, but why has it sold so much? Nintendo released the game boy in 1989, and it sold fast straight from the start. Of course the fantastic games Super Mario Land and Tetris were available, which probably started the craze, but why did it keep selling after? I think the most popular thing about the Gameboy is that it is portable, and great fun to play in a long car trip or on a camping trip if you're bored. Its popularity then boosted up again in the early 90's when they released the Game Boy pocket. The lighter, thinner and better vision of the screen caused the sales of the system to rise again. The Mario games kept it alive, and Rareware, as always, kept up to scratch with games such as RC-Pro AM and later Donkey Kong Land. Then the most important release, bar one, is the release of the Game Boy Color. These sold very fast and are still selling fast now. Then, of course, came Pokemon. Kids all over the world, (especially Japan for far too long), discovered the fun of training pets, and caused a great big grin to show on the face of Nintendo. Toys, cards, tv programmes and now films all helped towards the craze of small monsters. The craze of Pokemon also killed off the competion, with the Neogeo pocket dead in Usa, and soon to be removed from shelves over here too. The future? Bright. The Gameboy Advance is exciting people all over the world, with four multiplayer options on them and said to be as powerful as the Dreamcast 2D wise. Sony have now discovered the fun of portability, with the PS one just announced, and Nintendo rumoured to be battling them with a system as well. Whatever happens, one thing will always be sure. The Gameboy will never die.
