I think lol and some of the others are OK providing the rest of the post is written not written in Pigeon English.
Sarcasm, jokes, being playful, etc... can all seen to mean something totally different to the reader if they dont understand the intention...
Especially since most people (okay... by that I mean me :) ) are trying to get their idea, conversation piece across as quickly as possible...
I dont want to spend half an hour attempting to validally express what is probably a rather dodgy gag... and these abbreviations/acronyms tend to do the trick...
The writen medium is notriously hard to present a valid context...
