All the stadiums are being rebuilt or built from scratch. I've seen an article in the Telegraph Sport supplement, and only the main stadium (The one used by the national team) is being hardly modified.

personally i think it is a bad thing over all:

Pro's:

Spreads global football desire in a continent where they already love football
Encourage african Youth development
Economic boost to Africa
On our timezone!!!!!!!!!!!

Cons:

The biggest con of all is that south Africa has the worst stadium safety in the world. England got screwed on hillsborough when 95 people died. Was it the pirates match where a couple of hundred died a couple of years ago. a lot of the stadiums have poor safety.

World cup continent rotation is ridiculously unfair. on rotation around regardless of the fact that the highest proportion of top footballing nations deserving to qualify are from europe and SA

we get done over violence and hooliganism when crime rates are ridiculously higher in SA.

I actually don't have to much of a problem with SA having the world cup,you are pretty well dveloped and have the infrastructure to cope with it. i just think over all it is outweighed by the cons, but i would have been outraged if it had gone to one of the other candidates.

I know what you're talking about. But maybe an internation tournament is what S.A needs to highlight problems and the advances it has made.

I didn't say it was a bad place, I said it isn't ideal. If they were going to hold the world cup anywhere in Africa, Morocco would have been better due to its rich clulture and lack of epidemic. Religious divides and stadiums may have been problems, but I think it would have been a great place to hold a world cup.

It's a pandemic all over Africa, mainly sub-Sahara. I know.

And yet, why does this make it a bad place for a tournament? It's not like Aids isn't in Germany or Portugal - 1 in 5 people in Portugal live in poverty. Bad place for a tournament?

Well, it's a bloody epidemic there. The government ignored it in the 1990s and are now having to face up to the consequences.

South Africa isn't an ideal place to hold a World Cup due to the crime and Aids, but world cups now alternate between the continents. Morocco would have been a good choice, but it's all about how much the country is planning to spend on facilities.

South Africa has held rugby and cricket world cups with little trouble (Apart from the problems surrounding using branded items at some cricket grounds, but that was resolved). Plus, some decent new stadiums have been built. And any crime problems will be avoided, because the poorer areas are nowhere near the stadiums.

I think that no matter where the world cup is in 2010, some mugs that call themselves England "fans" will trash up parts of your country.
