They always did. Even if they lost the game if they beat us they still progress. A draw or a loss produced the same outcome for them really.

Rather than England playing badly, the French did in this game, and the Croatians played far better than the Swiss game showed they could.

England looked mediocre against the French - Craotia looked like they could win - I think that says it all.
