Ralf Schumacher has won the Canadian Grand Prix, his second win at Canada and his third career win to keep him in touch with the Championship challengers.
The race started bizarrely with the weather forecast saying it would be bright and sunny, only for it to rain for the first 20 laps. It wasn't heavy and didn't make the ground wet but it was still slippery early on.
Pantano was the first to make a mistake when he spun trying to take Villeneuve. The spin could have possibly led to Pantano's retirement on lap 11 when his right rear suspension failed. Button also made a mistake trying to overtake Barrichello about halfway through the race.
Baumgartner handed Ralf Schumacher the race early when he made a mistake letting him through. Coulthard also made a mistake and that could have led to his retirement on lap 18 with left front suspension failure. Other retirements were Verstappen with a water leak on lap 13, Firman with a puncture on lap 13 and Sato with a water leak on lap 43.
One stop strategies were the fastest strategy by a mile and Ralf Schumacher stormed to a comfortable win. Baumgartner lost his recent 100% run with a mistake and only just managed to hold off Montoya to take 2nd. Montoya couldn't find a way past Baumgartner and finished 3rd for the second race in a row. Villeneuve was catching the top 3 but was too far behind and finished 4th. Barrichello finishes 5th for Renault, Salo just manages to hold on to his Championship lead with a 6th place finish. Panis takes 2 points for 7th and Frentzen takes one point for 8th.
