As we move furthur into the future of gaming, we see that less and less games are built with a 2D engine.

Handheld consoles are known for there ability to support 2D platformers really well, even the original GameBoy had a great titles including the series of three Donkey Kong games. What is these handheld could play 3D games, then I feel thatt the end of the 2D gaming world would be ever closer, when I had a SNES, I looked forward to 3D environments so much, infact seeing the first screenshots of Mario 64 quenched my thrist for more, I had never played a true 3D game, and the first one that I did play was Mario64. It was a brilliant game, known as the first true 3D adventure game, but was this game too good, yes too good?

With the speeding market of gaming running how it is at the moment, companies are forgetting the main factor of playing games, the 'fun'. 2D gaming was were the fun began, and I fell 3D gaming was were the fun never progressed.

I can really only see one piece of hardware bringing back the great 2D platformers of the Mega Drive and SNES quality, this piece of hardware is the GameBoy Advance, after just receiving mine today (a bit late) and getting Mario Advance as one of the games, I can truely say 2D gaming is making its way back onto the thrown, and if anyone wants to disagree, then just make you way to a nearest shop with a playable GBA and let rip, because as Shania would say 'nothing compares' to it.

Isnt Side scrolling/Side-ways scroller an old term for any horizontally scrolling game...

Although wasnt the term originally made during the eighties to discriminate shoot-em-ups...

Side-scrolling Shoot-em-up as opposed to a virticle scrolling shoot-em-up?

Which.. for obvious reasons... got tagged onto and horizontal scrolling game type?

Speaking of eighties games.. has anyone heard anything about the new version of Paradroid there supposed to be writing?

I prefer to think of sideways scroller as a platform game restricted to one direction of movement, sometimes forced at a steady pace - eg in the early mario games, the screen would not track you backwards, only forwards. By forced scrolling, I mean such stages as the sub level and flying level on super mario land.

Side Scroller is a new term for an old (but good) style of game....

I prefer to stick with Platform games.....

The old side scrolling Mario games were good because of the Gameplay.

er-no shakes his Gameboy in bewilderment.

Something beeps and a sign comes on screen of a starving man next to a big railway bridge.

The screen slowly changes to:

MADE IN CHINA - sucker.

But your's will probably stop working in a week's time (they die if you don't feed them) and then you'll need to go to Japan to exchange it.

That is very true Tony, that is why all I talk about is true 3D games like Mario64... I wonder the GBA is capable of playing MGS (Nintendo say) maybe.... just maybe...

I think 2D is good too. But I think GBA will see a lot of 3D stuff.

Of course some of the 3D stuff is really 2D!
