My proposal would be to have a general game that involved both space battles and adventuring together, after all, the films were not solely about shooting other spacecraft out of the sky, were they? An engine similar to Phantasy Star Online could be used for the planet scenes and players would be free to travel in their X-wing or other craft to carry out missions on the planet on in the skies above. The missions themselves would not be linear, but you could choose to be a bounty hunter or work for the empire/rebels through the work you’d choose to do and the people you would associate with.
This would all start from a central and neutral location like Tatooine, where both the Empire and the Rebels could be easily located, alongside many of the stranger customers wanting to smuggle goods around in secret. You could even visit the various bars and taverns to sell/buy information or gain the less scrupulous customers. From here you could also buy and sell ships (starting with an old wreck that would just about get a few jobs done, but wouldn’t stand a chance in a dogfight) and collect maps which could unlock other worlds for you to visit. All of this could be rounded off with a nice score playing in the background and voice acting for all the characters.
Space battles would be entered into by either carrying illegal cargo or wanted people and also by taking up Rebel or Imperial missions to destroy enemy installations. The engine could be based on a souped up X-wing vs Tie Fighter system and dependant on the type of craft you are flying.
The ultimate option though would be to take this game online and work with or against other real people, all carrying out their own missions and roles in the Star Wars universe. There would be certain meeting places where visitors could hang around or leave messages to group together on missions. Players acting as bounty hunters could then work for other players in tracking down a third player’s character and bringing them back either dead or alive for a hefty reward. This way, the whole Star Wars universe would come to life and feel more like the real thing than to interact with computer controlled characters or fight other pilots that you never see.
Maybe one day it will be a dream that comes true, until then may the force be with the games producers who hold the Star Wars licences….
Broadband is still waaaay too expensive at present. More's the pity.
You could do somethings offline, that don't affect the other gamers, such as train in combat or stuff like that.
Also people could buy shops, bars, etc. I'd like to see the players having some sort of presence in the world.
I thing the reason this sort of thing hasn't happened is its an ambitious project, and if you need servers's and stuff like that, you need to know its going to be successful.
I'm not sure if it needs to be Star Wars, but Star Wars gives a feel of a large universe out there, and gives things a sense of scale.
Yeah, the missions would have to be 'fed in' from an outside source, but isn't this what PSO does already? You can even download extra offline missions for that as well.
This is really something a lot of people would like to see, I feel, and It's just a pity that Lucasarts don't feel the licence is fit for a deeper game such as this one instead of just endless shooting games and racers.
I think that this could work. The idea of missions could be part of it all, as there could be competition between members of one side to complete their mission, and get the rewards. The missions could be generated randomly or by someone running the game, who controls the tactics of each side. Or even one of the players could control thinks when they progress through the ranks, and are elected commander of the fleet or something like that.
Killing characters is very difficult, as they would ahve to start again. Perhaps like in elite you could have an escape pod, and lose your ship, but keep you money, and lose reputation.
The Star Wars theme would be fitting, as it allows for rebels and the empire to fight, and to have merceneries fighting for money, all starting (probably as traders).
An idea with potential.
PS
pb you have won filmaday with your post on Things film makers should never do
Also the license holders of Star Wars are lucasarts, which is probably part of lucasfilm, who produce the films, or a company owned in part by George Lucas.
Why haven't they made a Star Wars game including Han, Leia and Luke for N64 yet???
