You only have to look at the likes of superstar games designer Paul Mugenuex and his eclectic creation Blue and Green to realise that computer games are the new rock. Like rockers Bon Jeremy, Mugenuex creates a world of beau font hairdos and wild colours to provide a symbolic shade of subculture to the fantasy element of the jeux de vivre. His ability to mix a God-style game with primetime TV personalities the PG Tips Chimps and ‘Who wants to Win a Thousand’ presenter Christopher Tyrant created an entopic view of life in antependia during the late 60’s.

Similar in style is the group effort of MachinecodeMasters, who entered the games universe with such seminal hits as Advanced Sheep Sheering Sim, appearing on the infamous St Clair Rainbow and Commode 97 computers which gained a cult following in reaction to the ambience of the juxtaposition of Sheep and sheers and relates to the general 1980’s powerdressing elements of the Thatcherite society, before creating such masterpieces of the gaming arts as Toker Touring racing, a fascinating look at the drugs and driving scene of the 80’s. This can be matched to the melodical hits of the famous anti-commercial artists Blue Fred who created their art piece The Brick Partition to explain the parting of societies fundamental issues and then went on to gain notoriety by including the voice of famous disabled scientist Sir Simon Hankering on their hit Stop Walking, which focused on the importance of standing still.

The punk element of musicology can be seen to be mirrored by the famous Ninetotendo artists ‘Medium to Well Done’ and their creation Crunchy’s awful fair trade day, where they extrapolate the elements of slave labour in third world countries and blame the Queen for the droughts in Africa. This reflects on Punk Supremes The Eunuch Guns, whose album, ‘Never care about the Boleros’ received damning reviews for it’s outspoken trend analysis of the English society during the 70’s.

So after examining the evidence in the market trend line of industrial game development, we see an overall turn towards the rock based playthings of youth becoming embroiled in the subjects of gaming and vice versa.

Did you know?

That the gaming industry makes more money than the video (now also DVD) industry's and if fast catching up with the music industry?
