......my very first car, woooh. It's a little Ford Escort, 1.4, K reg. Good little runner considering its age though, and it'll do me for a start. Freedom at last.

Yea, after I got my quote, my dad was straight on the computer getting a quote for his car. He's knocked about £110 off his insurance now.

I don't really understand the new plates myself. The old ones were simple. The first letter represents the year i.e, K = 1993. Then the three numbers eg. 999, mean that this car was the 999th car off the production line at that particular factory. And the three final letters represent the factory the car was made in. The older ones were easy too, take 'GGG 235 K'. It's just the same really, except reversed. But obviously the K doesn't mean the car was made in 1993, you just have to do some math to work out it's age.

Ah, maybe you're right there. Last time I needed to look for insurance, I was under 21. Since then I sold my car and have got free insurance on my new one. I'll most likely be using Churchill next time too, it's just that they don't provide cover for under 21's so I didn't know just how good they were. I've since had a 'pretend quote' for the car I'm in now and yes, they are cheaper :)

You can be assured that I won't be bothering with all that malarkey. I also find those big exhaust stupid. These boy racers always modify their cars from a cosmetic sense but forget about the important part, the engine. If I ever decide to modify a car, it would have to be a car that I was planning on keeping for a long time, and the first area to get modded would be the engine. There's nothing cooler than having a bog standard looking car, and then leathering these boy racers at the lights or a strip. :)

Plus, there's absolutely no advantage to putting big stupid alloys on either, because they are actually heavier than the steel wheels that come as standard. However if you got Magnesium alloys that would be a different story as they're paper weight, but then, so would your wallet after buying them.

And one last thing, there's absolutely no chance that I'll be listening to Trance or Dance crap either, that stuff drives me round the bend. I'll give the town a shock, a baseball cap wearing 'townie' listening to some good rock music for a change. Also, the reason I wanted a Corsa, was because that's the car I learned in, so I know them pretty well.

I used that Confused.com, you know the one that checks out all the companies and then gives you a quote from each one? Well Churchill were by far the cheapest. Tesco were around £1800 (£1800 for an old Escort! not likely) and Elephant were around £1500. I think Churchill's quote will be the cheapest I'll find so I'm going to go with them. But thanks for the advice anyway.

Close. But A and E were used. I, O, U and Z were not as they were deemed to similar to other letters and could be confused more easily than most. Q was a reserved plate for special vehicles, or ones that had been written off but then repaired.

The area code bit is as above.

This system started in 1963 and was annual, originally with new registration plates on the 1st of January. This changed in '82 or so to become the 1st of August. The last full year plate was the S prefix plate, as opposed to the S suffix plate which was 21 years before. T, V, W, X and Y were all only six monthly plates, being released on the 1st of March and 1st of September.
