When you have a broadband connection, you run your phone into it using standard phone sockets, right?

And a 56k modem effectively just plugs into a standard phone socket and 'makes a call', right?

So if I had a broadband net connection, and wired my 56k modem into a phone socket, I should still be able to use it for a dial-up net connection.
Is that correct ?

I might be getting one in a while, and it'd be nice to still be able to access my freeola web hosting.

Mircofilters arent a problem at all. You do need to make sure you have every device that is connected to a phone socket filtered, so if you have 3 phone sockets in use then you need 3 mirofilters. You normally get a couple of microfilters from your ISP if you get a modem from them, if not they usually sell them for £5-£10. It is important that every phone socket that is in use is filtered, otherwise if its not filtered and for example the phone rings the ADSL will lose sync and you will get disconnected from the Internet.

Exactly.

Microfilters don't sound like a big problem then. Guess I just have to find a nice broadband package now :^)

Well you can use the phone but you wouldnt be able to use the phone and ADSL at the same time.

Mumbai Duck you need micro-filters if you want a decent setup otherwise everytime the phone is used or 56K modem etc than the ADSL will stop working. As Notorious has said its for filtering out signals, actually it doesnt really filters but more like divide. The frequency for the phone and ADSL are different so the micro-filter splits them up and sends them to 2 different sockets.

Why would you want to use 56K anyway when you have ADSL ?

Wee boxes basically that you plug the phone into, and then the micro filter into the wall socket. It is for filtering out certain frequencies. You can't use the phone without them.

Yep that works but my PC just picks which connection to use, and often foolishly relys entirely on a 56k connection so websites load so slowly. And once I disconnect they load instantly because of broadband.

That's correct, but you need to plug your dial-up modem into a micro-filter.

Works for me but the dial up connection speed is a little down compared to pre broadband.
