Oh, the first thing you need to know about this film is that it doesn't carry on where Return of the Jedi left off. In fact, it is set before all three.
The story no longer focuses on the Evil Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance. A new foe darkens our screens; The Trade Federation.
The story begins in the classic Star Wars fashion, with the text fading off into space. The greedy Trade Federation, following the taxation of trade routes to remote planets, has created a blockade of deadly battleships, stopping all trade to the small Planet of Nabboo. In an attempt to resolve the matter, the Galactic Senate sends two Jedi, posing as ambassadors, to the Trade Federation's blockade.
The film begins with the Jedi being found out by the federation, and were ordered to be killed.
After fighting their way out of trouble, the Jedi find an invasion fleet, set to attack Nabboo. So, naturally, they stow away on it.
From here, the plot thickens. The Jedi befriend a Gungan, and have to rescue Queen Amidala, the ruler of Nabboo. They temporarily escape the planet, only to find that their hyper drive is leaking
However, this turns out to be good thing, as they land on Tattooine for repairs. Although the Queen objects, they have to land. Here they find young Anakin Skywalker, a slave, and the Jedi soon realise that he is ‘The one that will bring Balance to the Force’.
Now, I will not reveal any more of the plot, but obviously, the good guys win and free the planet. Oh, and Anakin begins training to become a Jedi.
Ewan McGregor plays the young Obi-Wan Kenobi in this film, Apprentice to the Jedi Qui Gon Jin. Both Jedi are played extremely well. The amazing stunts and lightsabre duels from the first film are still here. You can almost feel the way the Force runs through them. Ewan McGregor plays his character very well, it is in depth and his feelings and thoughts are brought to the audience.
Natalie Portman plays Queen Amidala, though personally, I think she could be in a more attractive role. Queen Amidala is a young monarch, controlling the planet of Nabboo. Young though she is, she is a very good leader, though is seen to be naive by some characters. Her character is well acted, and a twist in the plot near the end is very clever!
Darth maul, a Sith Lord, sworn enemy of the Jedi is played by Ray Park. His character does not come into the film much, except one big lightsabre duel, in which he is eventually killed.
Young Anakin Skywalker, found on Tattooine is a young slave. He is the only human able to Pod race, suggesting he has Jedi reflexes. Obi-Wan believes he is ‘The one that will bring Balance to the Force’. He is freed from slavery by Qui-Gon, and saves Nabboo, destroying the Droid control ship. He is played by Jake Lloyd.
Ahmed Best plays the very comical Jar Jar Binks, a Gungan who is saved by Qui-Gon. He follows everyone around in the plot, normally getting in the way with his clumsy behaviour. But he eventually becomes a Gungan General, a hero in the battle against the droid army.
This instalment of the Star Wars saga does not let it down. The great mind of George Lucas has created another amazing plot. It has lots of twists, keeps you glued to your seat, is engrossing, and there are no holes. It is another great story.
The special effects, as we expect from a Star Wars movie are amazing. Several of the characters are strictly computer-generated! The spacecraft are amazingly detailed, and as always, the mid space dogfights are amazing.
The actors are simply amazing. They really seem to know their characters, which George Lucas has created in enormous depth. The relationships between the characters are amazing and entwined. They've really give a lot to the plot!
There are scenes set in cities, oceans, deserts and lush green planets. So, there is a lot of variety of scenes.
With a great story, special-effects and character depth it is an amazing film. Bring on Episode 2!!
