Good on Man Utd signing Alan Smith and getting close to Heinze before Euro 2004 kicks off. Same to any team that buys the players they've been tracking for a while right now, because during Euro 2004, anything can happen.

Buying a player based on their performances at a major tournament is dangerous business. John Jensen wasn't the goalscoring midfielder he appeared to be during Euro 1992 was he? Karel Poborsky wasn't half the player he appeared to be at Euro 1996. Rio Ferdinand would no way have cost £30 million had it not been for the last World Cup boosting his price.

You just know it's going to happen though, a player that's not part of the first 11 will get a chance, and he'll be highly impressive. Big clubs will see him, and when one approaches to sign him, the others will worry that they could miss out, and the price will go sky-high - even if they barely did enough to scrape into the squad for the national team, and just happen to hit the form of their life during the tournament.

Imagine if one of the other participants has a player that's the equivolent to Darius Vassell. Not greta for his club, but does significantly better for his country. What if due to injuries he plays in every games, and scores 3 or 4 goals. He'd look good. As soon as he was snapped up and went to a new club, chances are he'd still be the same disappointing player at club level.

You can tell it'll happen though. One English club will buy based on performances this season, and will take the risk of not really getting what they think.

Although it still isn't "tournament-time" yet, and Japan won't be in it for obvious reasons either, I wouldn't be surprised if, say, Man United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle and Middlesbrough all went bidding-crazy to try and get Alex from his current J-League side, after last night's performance... ;)

However, I reckon Wayne Rooney's value is gonna rocket stupidly-high anyhow this summer, whether he gets a move to an even bigger club or not.

I reckon he'll get ANOTHER new contract by Christmas, mind...
And, for the 18-year-old, how many would that be now - three? Four?...

It certainly ain't the greedy little porker's first SINCE he singed pro for Everton!

we only really went for him because we thought we might need cover, for our champs league run and were hoping he turned out good (which he more than likely is). we won't bother with any real risks now the seasons over, and we already have a dynamic squad to attract the elite. so we'll go for the top notch like cannavaro, nesta and samuel who we missed out on. Who are all but guaranteed to be successful.

Well for once its the other way round.

Chelsea seemed to have stolen most of the players that Manu Utd had been tracking e.g Duff, Robben, and an attempt at Ronaldinho.

But this time, Man Utd look to be set to steal Heinze from us, a player we've been tracking for a while, and made a bid for in January.

Ah well, if you get him, I hope he's cr*p.

Indeed, I applaud Birmingham for picking up Heskey at a very reasonable price. I think he's destined to be part of a great partnership alongside Forsell, and if he plays well for England in Euro 2004, Birmingham will have a bargain. Perhaps Birmingham won't be as drowned of goals as they were this season.

Viana has never been given a chance at newcastle, he's a central midfielder, this is a guy who was young world player of the year.
As for the subject, you can buy now cheap or you can risk a bidding war if they play well during the summer.
