The fairytale revival of crystal palace's season since december under the reign of iain dowie has completed a miraculous ending after the eagles beat the hammers by a goal to nil in the play off final in cardiff.

A no-hoper shot by andrew johnson for palace on the 62nd minute was spilled by west ham goialie Stephen bywater, on which neil shipperly tucked in the rebound. In the next two minutes, west ham had two goals disallowed from connoly asnd reo-coker. Then, when steve lomas' 25-yard thunderbolt was the fantastically parried away by former play-off winner nico vaesen, you got the feeling it wasn't the iron's day.

And, with a 30 million pound prize and aplace in the premiershi[p elite, what a day for palace!!!

Can't wait to go to work and collect £15. We all put a fiver in and chose a team. I had first choice and chose Palace.

Could of picked up £60 from the Premiership Fantasy League, but ended up coming 2nd.

Bloody hell!!! They were near the bottom with us (Bradford City) just before half way through the season and they go and get promoted . . . why couldn't we do that?

Congratulations to Ian Dowie and his Crystal Palace team. The man deserves credit for the way in which he's helped this one-time quick-sinking team turn-around for a Premiership return, once again... As much as I would've prefered to see West Ham back-up instead!

:) :(

I am surprised Steven Bywater remains to be their No.1 after all this time. He may be young, and some may rate his potential quite high, but, in all honesty - as excrutiatingly hard as it is for me to say such a thing - I think The Hammers were better off with DAVID JAMES in goal! :o

But, Bywater should by no means be to blame for West Ham's failure for an instant return to the top-flight. At the end of the day, it is all a team-effort. For when they couldn't stop the goal, where was their attack to assist in bringing them right-back into the game?

For a club to have lost international players like Joe Cole, Rio Ferdinand, David James (...) and several others in the last year-or-so, to have gotten this-close after so many troubles is surely a big enough achievemnt anyhow.

Perhaps expectations were just a little too high for this team to make an instant Premier League comeback for 2004?

Better luck next season! :)

Agreed, to be honest that’s what I'd expect of a Division 1 goalkeeper, and Bywater is no more than that. If he'd have pushed it wide it'd been a brilliant save, as it was an unexpected shot with a deceiving amount of power behind it, and he was shuffling in the wrong direction to cover the angle.

And i've seen worse; Anelka earlier in the season along the by-line?

Erm, not quite, he was unsighted and didn't have very long to react - personally i thought it was a decent save, especially after the deflection.

Out of interest have you ever *properly* played in goal? It's harder than it looks. No way was that on par with Kahns spill.

Bad goalkeeping - No
Bad defending - Yes

It was. He spilled it and it was easy, just like when oliver kahn spilled rivaldo's shot in the world cup final, completely dreadful goalkeeping. anyway, well done palace, i'm taking the mick out of people at school (mind you, i'm one to talk, i support the no-longer almighty whites!)

It was hardly a no-hoper shot. Anyway, congrats to Palace, I was hoping they'd win.
