I was watching an episode of 'Futurama' today and I noticed they were talking about what the 20th century ever gave to the world and my answer to that would need to be.

" Everything "

The 20th century is probably the most succesful century to date for technology but not all has been for good such as war and nuclear weapons.

Well lets see the first item that pops into my head is the plane 1903 by the Wright brothers it has changed travelling, there was great medicines discovered and vacination and all that other important great discoveries that I could mention but to get to my point the 20th century will go down in history because it was the time when the COMPUTER was created - The future is computers we will need them for everything - Think of the 21st century without computers - It would be crap wouldn't it you would miss out on many hours of gaming for starters and also all the other stuff would be nackered as well (sorry I cut it short because I need to do Computing Past Paper) :D

The operations of electronic calculators are performed by integrated circuits - tiny arrays of thousands of transistors. These circuits contain permanent instruction for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, (the last 3 mathematical operations can all be performed by repetitive addition algorithms) and other functions. The numbers entered by the operator are briefly stored in addresses, or locations, in the random-access memory (RAM), which has space for the numbers used and produced at any given time by the circuits that contain the instructions for mathematical operations.

Charles H. Duell, Commissioner, U.S. Patents in 1899, suggested that there was no more need for the Patent Office because "Everything that can be invented has been invented."

Was that the quote?

Yeah but that century was rubbish ;)

I remember hearing an inventor in 1783 or something once said he was quiting his profession because he believed everything had been invented that was worthwhile

What a silly man :D

The first mechanical digital calculating machine was built in 1642 by the French scientist-philosopher Blaise Pascal.
