I'm getting this message on my PC now. Been running Windows 2000 find for a good couple of years now. Got this message back last autumn a fair few times, so formatted and re-installed.

Fine for a while, then it came back.

I've done a complete virus scan with Nortons 2004. It found a couple of viruses, which it deleted. However, the next time I turn my pc on, it happened again.

Sometimes I can be using it for half an hour or so before it happens, some times it doesn't happen at all, and sometimes it happens within a couple of minutes of boot up.

Once it has happened, however, I can't copy and paste stuff. If I click on a link in IE which should open in a new window, it won't. If I try right clicking and selecting Open in a new window it won't do that either.

It's basically a right pain in the backside. None of my files are corrupted or deleted, so I think it's more of a Windows mess up than a virus, but I've had W2K for ages before it started happening.

Has anyone experience anything like this, or knows what it is or how to sort it out?

Many, many thanks.

You can stop svchost loading specific services by fiddling about with the registry. I think you'll need to use trial and error, turning them off one at a time (suspicious, non-MS sounding ones first) until you find the culprit. I presume that this will severely mess up your PC if you remove the wrong thing so unless you have some way of restoring the registry if Windows fails to boot then I wouldn't do it. XP has system restore but I don't know whether 2000 has something similar. It might be easier to reinstall because this could be a lengthy, possibly futile troubleshooting process.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
