In fact, Minardi looked like they weren't going to make it this year. They were out of money, out of ideas, but boss Giancarlo Minardi was determined to be on the grid in Australia.
But just as it looked like Minardi were finished, along came Australian Paul Stoddart, and bought a large share of the team. There he used his money to get Minardi into the Formula 1 2001 Season.
This year the car will be called the European Minardi PS01, and will be driven by 2 F1 rookies, Tarso Marques and Fernando Alonso. Both of these drivers are very talented, especially Alonso, but they are lacking in F1 experience.
But this little Italian team will never give up on getting the rare point, as they did around 3 seasons back. Minardi's tactic is to just finish the race, and hope enough cars retire for one of their drivers to get in the top 6. This has worked before, but not so far this season.
Minardi's most successful moment came around 11 years ago, when one of their cars qualified second. Unfortunately, no points were won in the race itself, but it was a huge boost for them.
One moment in Minardi histroy that will go down as one of the saddest came 2 years ago. With only a few laps left, Luca Badoer was on target for 4th place, the highest any Minardi driver has been in a very long time. Unfortunately, Badoer's engine blew, which left him crying at the side of the track.
Since then they have been sitting at the back of Formula 1, waiting for the chance to show what they can do. That chance hasn't come yet, but it hopefully will soon.
Actually, the Minardi has a reputation for being quite a reliable car. I always seem to notice that in the race classification, there always seems to be at least one Minardi finishing the race, normally in last. In fact, Minardi has one of the most reliable cars in F1 in my opinion, but they just don't have the speed to get high enough up the field.
This year has been quite success so far, though. The car has been reliable, with very few retirements, and Fernando Alonso has many times outqualified cars such as Arrows, Prost and even Benetton. Although Tarso Marques has yet to shine, he is defintely a talented driver, and he just needs a little more experience.
Overall, it will take a long time to get Minardi up to the levels of teams like Sauber and BAR, but that is what they are aiming for. Already this year they are showing signs of being faster than some teams, and hopefully Minardi will continue to progress into a F1 team that will be challenging for points in every race.
