Jacques Villeneuve proved once again why he is currently the most successful driver in SR F1 when he won the Austrian Grand Prix, Ferrari's first ever win in their 40th attempt. The day got even better for Ferrari when Michael Schumacher equalled his best ever finish with 3rd place.
The majority of the top 6 were wiped out in the first 3 laps when De La Rosa was squeezed onto the gravel and dropped a lot of places. Raikkonen and Barrichello were battling for 2nd when they touched. Raikkonen spun on the track but Barrichello came off worse when his car ran into the gravel and rolled over and retired on lap 3. Raikkonen's chances of points were more or less finished when Da Matta couldn't avoid Raikkonen's stricken car. Da Matta retired on lap 3 but Raikkonen survived but needed a new front wing.
Pantano spun at the back and Ralf Schumacher couldn't show any fight when his car let him down by burning oil in a spectacular fire on lap 3. The Minardi's looked quick as they had a 1-2 but on lap 15, Baumgartner's engine blew up in a plume of smoke. Verstappen only lasted to lap 17 when he started leaking water and retirement.
Button, Firman, Pizzonia, Panis and Fisichella all had moments and lost the odd place but Heidfeld made a nasty error and smashed into the barriers to retire on lap 48. Coulthard will be cursing his luck when he had 2nd place in the bag only for his car to develop transmission problems and he retired on lap 60.
Villeneuve will be the toast of Italy with a Ferrari win in Austria. Salo drove a magnificent race to come 2nd and take the Championship lead. Michael Schumacher gives Ferrari 3rd place and who knows where Ferrari will want to go from here. Sato got his way to 4th but loses the Championship lead. Button keeps his points tally ticking over with 5th place. Bruni gives Jaguar 3 points and a share of the Constructors lead. Fisichella drove a solid race to 7th and Panis finishes 8th.
