the divide...

In amongst the millions of people, (young, old, male, female, etc) who are in some way shape or form connected with the computer game industry, there are sub groups, divided into catogories most significant to them.

The majority of gamesplayers these days, tend to be people who play games for fun, and will play any game, on any console. Many of todays gamesplayers don't look beneath a game, and simply endulge themselves in the glistening graphics without really understanding the meaning, or point of the game.

Or so we would be lead to beleive.

In reality, no-one plays computer games without really taking an interest. In reality, there are no such thing as hardcore gamers, or casual gamers. Many would claim to be one of the so called 'hardcore gamers' but what is it that distinguishes between a hardcore gamer, and someone who simply plays games for the enjoyment they bring?

There are people who stick soley to one games company. Very often, the first major console they buy determines just which company their money is saved for ready for the next console. It cannot be denied that there are such people who after the success of the Playstation, will not even consider looking at the Gamecube, or X-Box, for the sole fact that their minds have long been made up. Whether or not the right decision, more often than not people do not allow for change. People do not allow their minds to be stretched a little, and do not allow themselves to try new things. We all know of someone who will play a game on what he/she considers a rival console, and deny it's credibility even if it really is one of the greats of the modern era of games releases. There are people who will do their very best to cover their enjoyment when playing games on a rival console, for the simple fact that they do not wish to be seen as someone who will go against their word. After singing the praises of whichever company it may be, they would feel idiotic to admit that they were wrong. To admit that a different console by a different company would have been a better choice.

Truth is, the mark of someone who really is interested in the games industry is when your able to admit that your decision, although not an awful one, was not the best given the circumstances. When you can admit that you regret buying a certain console, not due to it being a sub-standard console, but because another would have been more enjoyable... that is a sign or really understanding and being a part of the industry.

Maybe you really do favour one company over another, but that doesn't mean you should hold anything against other companies, as that is simply limiting your overall enjoyment.

We all play games for our own reasons, but usually, it's just for fun. So, the so called divide in the games industry isn't quite what it is made out to be.

Those of us who play any game on any console are the ones who really get to enjoy the industry, and are given the opportunity to play some of the most engorssing games ever developed.

At the root of it, we all purchase games systems for the same reason. So, let's not throw around the HARDCORE and CASUAL gamer phrases quite so often.
