Anyway, this will be a convoluted stream of consiousness, about patriotism.
I've given up the belief of patriotism. I don't believe it's worthwhile, useful, or in fact, serves a purpose. I used to be proud of England, of Great Britain, because we'd achieved things that were great. I blinded bad things, and generall loved it when we kicked the Germans at a sport, if ever.
Now, I'm not saying I suddenly hate Britain because of policy, lifestyle, actions or anything. Nothing to do with Iraq, or horrible people on a train, or the weather (which, at the moment, is glorius). It's because my love for this country seems based on me rather than anything to do with it. Let me define something. There is a country, and then there is a nation. I love the country I live in. It could be called Outer Roman Outpost No. 34, its inhabitants could eat only snails, I don't care. I love the country I live in - the landscape, the climate, the way it inspires me. However, as a nation, I do not love it, because to me this emotion has become needless. I am proud of achievements people in this country have made, abhorr bad things people have done, and I love my friends and family. But take it out of context. I could be Canadian, Indonesian, a flippin Faeroe Isle-ian, I don't care, because they're all human. Think of so called 'genui' of nations - Bach in Germany for example. Take away a border or a million, and he becomes a genius of humanity, not of Germany. What I'm trying to say is this - you know that new Mastercard ad, designed to make us anticipate Euro 2004 and use MC all the time? The one with all the flags of St. George. Well, I probably would have loved that 5 years ago. Now it seems to me that it's all pointless. I'm not saying all those patriots should be ashamed of themselves, quite the opposite - I'm saying that they should be proud of their team going to challenge others. I mean, does it matter that they're English, more than the fact they are the same person as somebody in Argentina or France?
Anyhoo, got to go. Edit more in later.
...So it may have been intentional all along...
As for Patriotism, well it does have a purpose as far as being proud of your heritage. But, yes you have to question the blindness and bigotry that it often brings with it. However, mention that you are breaking down the barriers by creating a unified area such as Europe, and people run a mile.
