Rubens Barrichello has taken his first career pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix. Barrichello had spent 2 unfruitful seasons at Ferrari but the Renault seems to please his style. Pizzonia, the co-leader of the Championship, is also in prime position to take that lead outright from 3rd on the grid.
It's a tough place to qualify around because of the short lap. There are not many places to pick up time and plenty of places to lose it. Pantano made a mistake on his run and lost about half a second, which is enough to ruin a qualifying session.
A good few Championship chasers got good positions. Pizzonia in 3rd could extend his lead, Baumgartner in 2nd is a threat, Raikkonen in 4th and Button in 5th will not want to see Pizzonia get too far ahead. Bad days in qualifying again for Salo and Ralf Schumacher as Salo only got 18th and Ralf Schumacher is on the back row in 21st. Panis and Sato might pick up a few points from the midfield qualifying positions.
So, Barrichello finally has something to cheer about with his first career pole position. Baumgartner has scored points in ever round except San Marino and consistency is the key in such a close Championship. Pizzonia could have the outright Championship lead from 3rd on the grid. Raikkonen continues to qualify well in 4th. Button's confidence has returned and starts 5th. Verstappen's Minardi has developed a lot of failures and he'll be hoping they've gone as he starts 6th. De La Rosa is one of 3 drivers without points and he'll want to get some after the race. He starts 7th. Ferrari are having a better season and Michael Schumacher starts 8th.
