So what to do now? Well I think I’ll just go to the rooftop and start up the old whirlybird and take to the skies, so I do that. I put the camera into cinematic mode and watch, as my helicopter and the towering buildings just become shadows in the glaring sunset; it creates a brilliant atmosphere that not many games can provide.
As I fly over my Film Studios I feel like changing my mode of transport slightly, so I land the chopper just outside the studios. I go to the dock where my Seaplane is moored and I hop in, the water glistens as the sunlight bounces off it and then the plane makes it’s way through the waves and takes to the sky, I fly around until night falls and the whole city lights up, so I head over to Miami Beach and watch the neon lights illuminating the entire stretch of road.
Soon the sun begins to rise again, bringing the whole city back to life. As it turned out to be another sunny day I flew over to the harbour and jumped into one of my boats, and sailed all the way around the perimeter of Vice City until the sun set again; again as I like the whole atmosphere the sunsets bring to Vice City, I watched it from the boat, then I just switched the game off.
Now you’ll notice that during the whole time I was playing this game, not one bullet was fired, well, not by me anyway. And believe it or not I went outside afterwards, and shock horror, I didn’t feel the urge to shoot, punch or harm anybody. In actual fact Vice City has the opposite effect on me, it sort of calms me down a bit.
I think this clearly shows that, despite what all the critics would have you believe, Vice City isn’t all about the violence, it’s about giving you a very unique and enjoyable experience.
However in saying that, if you ask most KIDS what they think of Vice City, they’ll most likely say something like “oh it’s cool you get to shoot people and steal stuff”, most kids don’t understand some of the finer points of this game, I mean if you think back to that program about Vice City on the BBC, they had a couple of kids playing this game and all they talked about was the violence.
I think this gives the wrong impression to people outside of the gaming community as they obviously haven’t played Vice City (even though they’re very quick to criticise) so all their opinions are based on, is the words of a few kids that shouldn’t even be playing the game in the first place. I think if these ‘critics’ sat down with a more mature gamer then they may very well understand why people like this game, apart from going on mindless crime sprees.
I mean don’t get me wrong here, I know Vice City does require a certain amount of violence, there’s no question about it, but you can keep it down to a sensible level. Kids will undoubtedly drive around the street running over anything that moves, whereas older gamers don’t necessarily find that too amusing.
I mean I used to enjoy driving around in GTA3 just mindlessly knocking people over or shooting stuff, but now I find it a little tedious to be honest, and frankly it’s not really needed. I now concentrate more on the missions and more often that not, it’s a gangster who’s staring down the barrel of my Shotgun.
Anyway I don’t want to drag on here, I’m just trying to put across the point that Vice City doesn’t necessarily need to be about violence all the time, sometimes it’s good to just sit back, relax and enjoy the stunning world that is Vice City.
:)
Though I'd say it was slightly lessened in Vice City, GTA3 was great for its almost cinematic moments of beauty.
> You can complete Vice City and only kill 20 people. Probably.
You couldn't be more wrong if you tried. Probably.
:)
> Isn't that the point of the game?
You don't NEED to kill everything you see, that's the point I was trying to put accross. Of course you CAN choose to run around shooting everything if you want, but that is not the POINT of the game. The point of the game is to take out other gangsters to build your empire, but as I said in the main post you can just cruise around and enjoy the city.
People say that Vice City is all about violence, but I'd say it was more about choice and freedom, you can play the game the way you choose. So as I said, most younger gamers will just mess around, whereas most older gamers prefer to actually follow the story, and all the needless killing does get boring after a while. I hardly ever go around shooting innocent pedestrians now, I tend to follow the story a lot more and earn money to buy my businesses. I find that much more interesting that going crazy with an Uzi.
