Neo-Geo Cup ’98 – The Road to the Victory
Why road to the victory? Surely just road to victory would have been better. Anyway, This game was made for the 1998 World Cup and contains 64 international teams. That’s a fairly impressive number and all of the big teams are included as well as rubbish teams like the Ivory Coast. The game is very easy though, it can easily be completed without losing a single game but going through without conceding is much more of a challenge. If a game ends in a draw you can either have a replay, penalties, or sudden death. Oddly though, if you go into a replay the game records the match as a loss even if you win the replay but winning under either of the other options leaves the game won. The graphics are decent but the kits are pretty pathetic. You only get 1:30 to play per match and the clock stops dead on 1:30 even if you have just struck the ball and it’s about to enter the goal. Not good.

Hat Trick Hero ‘95
This game is brilliant. You start by picking your player, the guy with a blue beard is my personal favourite, and he’s called Ace. Pick your country and away you go. The first two games are simple and can be breezed through. After that the games become much harder but the game has so many wonderful touches that you will want to keep on playing despite your frustrations. E.g. One of the main tackles is to knee your opponents in the balls and then watch as they fall to the ground in pain, the referee can also be tackled and will fall over when the ball hits him, kick a ball past the goal and may hit one of the cameramen who will be knocked flying off their stools, and occasionally a cat will run on to the field in the middle of play stopping everything. The one annoying thing with this game is that you are only given the opportunity to have a penalty shoot out if you have a score draw, not 0-0, and scoring becomes very difficult in later games.

This is a poor attempt to mimic Hat Trick Hero. They give you the chance to pick your own personal player but the designs are poor. The cameramen fall off their stools still but the whole game is tarnished by its…well…its crapness. When the players kick the ball they lift their legs up to 90° like their doing a Hitler impression John Cleese style. Also the camera is at a very annoying angle making the game very difficult to play and the tackling system is awful, however, when a player goes in for a sliding tackle the animation looks quite good.

Tehkan World Cup
This is really bad. It has a bird’s eye view of the pitch and the screen is portrait rather than landscape. The graphics are awful and for some reason the players run twice as fast when running diagonally. It’s very easy to win every game 5-0 and there is no challenge to this game.

Only 8 teams to pick from but it’s quite a nice game. The graphics are good for 1990 and the controls feel good. There is another version of this game that is almost exactly the same except it’s a Champion’s League version instead of having international teams. This is definitely one of the better games due to the fluid controls and the fairness of the game along with a sensible A.I. level. The one drawback is that you have to control the goalkeeper yourself.

Well, that was a good waste of an hour.

.. ok, so 2 of those are TECHNICALLY football, but they're still ace
