Based on today's performance, he was awesome. Not only scoring a brilliant one but setting up a few chances.

Come on Sven, you know it makes sense.

Edit: Oh, and the whole Smith thing made me a bit emotional. True loyal player.

We've got too many nippy strikers like Vassel, Defoe and Owen though. To some extent Rooney falls under that category also. We need Heskey playing up front with Owen on form. Or else we may as well play 5 in the middle, or Rooney.

he's not a liabilty as such because he misses easy shots and miss hits passes. but only in the final third. not like joe cole who does it in his own area. i would say it's a frustration, but he doesn't do it all that often. he's consistently just above average. if he did have a bad game we could through on defoe, rooney or vassell though.

I agree that he has to be in the squad, but by the sound of Houllier this move to Birmingham is everything but a done deal.

In the England team? I would have them both in the squad but I have no desire to play Rooney at the moment unless he is coming off the bench late on. I'd be very temtped to start Heskey alongside Owen as you said.

Ditto, though he can be a liability when not on form

I don't think Alan Smith is ever going to be 2nd choice striker in the International Team though, let alone 3rd.

heskey has to be in the england squad and i dislike the rumours of him leaving. he's a quality strike partner, especially with owen, whom no matter in or out of form will start the match for england. therefore heskey and rooney have to be atleast rotated. i would value heskey as a player in my team any day. he drops off spins and passes well and heads to peoples feet well. if only he spent more time on the training ground. apparently houllier has pongolle, owen, etc. popping extra shots at the different keepers, but emile practices with the midfielders. he may not have the gift of scoring, but if he could just stick away the easy ones...

heskey is fine with me.

Alan Smith needs to be playing top flight football in order to play International football on a regular basis, Leeds need the money so it only makes sense that he moves on. If Leeds were relegated even further to say the 2nd or even 3rd dvision (hypothetically speaking) players like Alan Smith wouldn't stay there and play in them divisions would they? however much players love their club, personally ambition and desire have to take priority.

Would you value a place in the Premiership above playing for the club you "love" at Division 1 level? Personally I know that I wouldn't.

No, that's utter crap.

He'll be back when Leeds are promoted, but he needs top flight football, he's just too good a player not to get it.
