The Football Association have revealed their frankly substandard official song for the European Cup 2004 (while we’re inviting you to get involved with the Xfm Football Song ‘Born In England’ in person).
As a nation, we’re renowned for our musical talent and famed for our musical heritage. From these shores have come The Beatles, The Stones, The Sex Pistols, The Smiths, Oasis and Radiohead. We are truly a nation of musicians and music lovers.
Sadly, this seems to have completely passed the FA’s attention as they have decided to release a cover of The Farm’s ‘Altogether Now’ by DJ Spoony as their official song for the European Cup.
Obviously the ideal choice would have been Xfm’s entry ‘Born In England’, the winner of our Song For Euro 2004 competition, which is set to feature a host of celebrities including The Libertines, Danny from Supergrass and James Nesbitt, who said in a statement,
"I cannot believe the FA have turned down our song, I'm Irish but even I realise how great ‘Born In England’ is. ‘All Together Now’ remixed will not inspire the team or fans. Rubbish. It’s the Peoples Choice vs The FA. "
The Breakfast Show’s Christian O’Connell went on to add,
"The FA have proved yet again they have ears of lead when it come to hearing good music. After the shabbiness of that Ant and Dec song they've gone and got the Farm to re-do ‘All Together Now’ (which by the way Everton FC did in '95 and it only went to number 24). This one will be lucky to get that far.
“And it’s perfect that they got Radio 1 to air it this morning as they play any old rubbish these days."
However, next week will see the start of the recording of ‘Born In England’ and we want you to sing on the track. You could be appearing on a number 1 hit record.
We want you to come down to the QPR Football Ground (South Africa Road, Shepherds Bush, London, W12 7PA – nearest tube White City) next Tuesday (May 11) at midday.
We’ll then get everyone into the stands to record a chorus of 'Born In England’ that’ll appear on the record itself. We’ll need you from 12.00pm till about 2pm.
If you could wear an England shirt that’d be great, although the first 1,500 of you will get a brand new Breakfast Show ‘Twisted X’ football shirt absolutely free.
Football songs are always rubbish and totally meaningless.
