Chapter 1

George the cat strolled along the garden to a deep well hidden in the corner by the rose bushes. As he got to the well he saw a bird looking down into the dark, round well.

“What are you looking at?” asked George.

“Look. I can see another bird in the well.” Said the bird, “and he’s calling to me.”

George looked into the well.

“Oh, yes and I can see another cat,” He waved a paw. “and he’s waving back at me. Perhaps we should meet them?”

The bird looked up. “Shall we ask them?”

George Shouted down in to the well. “Hey down there, hello?”.

A voice, slightly deeper than George’s shouted back. “Hello.”

“Would you like to meet us?”

“Meet us…” came the voice from the well.

George turned to the bird. “Well, it looks like we should go and meet them.”

“But how do we get down there?” asked the bird.

George looked up at the wooden frame on top of the well. “We can use this bucket. It will lower us down slowly to the bottom.”

So they both climbed in to the bucket and it began to lower them slowly down towards the bottom of the well.

Chapter 2

After an hour they had only gone half way down the well. The bird looked out of the side of the bucket.

"Look! They are coming to meet us too." He said.

"Yes" Said George, "but it will be a long time before we meet.”

"Oh. I am so hungry." Said the bird. "I didn’t think it would take this long to reach them."

George just grinned.

After another hour it was getting a little darker and they were only a little bit further down the deep well. The bird complained again.

"I am so hungry. When are we going to eat?"

"Right now." Said George.

Half an hour later the bucket appeared and George climbed out of the well, a little bit fatter and a lot more contented. He strolled back home across the garden.

Chapter 3

The next day, George strolled across the garden and back towards the well. A bird stood on the edge of the well, looking down.

“What are you looking at?” asked George.

“Look. I can see another bird in the well.” Said the bird, “and he’s calling to me.”

George looked into the well.

“Oh, yes and I can see another cat,” He waved a paw. “and he’s waving back at me. Perhaps we should meet them?”

...and besides, I did start the competition off as a way of encouraging stories among the people here and it seems to have worked! That's good enough for me.

:-D

It was never really about the winning.
I mean, the chance to choose the next topic is hardly something to fight over! :-D

Yeah, unfortunately.
But like I said, it's as good as and, in some cases, better than some of the others posted, even in their intricacy.

Beautiful and clever in its simplicity. I agree that it was good in three small chapters, worked well as you broke each step up and the smiling starts half way through chapter 2 and continues still :)

EDIT - I've been saving this to read as a break from studying since you posted it earlier, as I expected a longer post from you. Oh well, back to the books.

Its simplicity is what makes it so clever. I liked it and I also felt the chapters worked really well. Good, but in my view it’s not going to be the winner.

I liked it, the bit where it all just *clicks* is brilliant, and certainly didn't fail in drawing a smile to my face.

That's what I was thinking.
The chapter thing split both sort of scenes up well.
Well. Aharh.
